Justice festival comes to the capital Words: Allan Radcliffe
he lidinburgh World Justice Festival runs from
Tuesday I‘) June-Sun I July in venues across the
capital. The festival. vvhich features a wide selection of events linked by the themes of global justice. has been expanded due to the massive success of last year‘s inaugural one-day event. The finale of this year‘s festival coincides with the anniversary of the Make Poverty History demonstration of summer 2005.
The focus of the event will be firmly on solutions — namely. \vhat ‘ordinary‘ Scottish citizens can do to help create a fairer \vorld. Programme highlights include a screening of Heidi Bachram’s The (urban ('(mm't'tiun. which depicts two communities affected by corporate pollution. the first in Scotland. another in Brazil. There will be an appearance by ‘no engine carpenter" Mukti Mitchell. currently sailing around the [FK coast in a zero-emission yacht. Justice in the (iardens is a Sunday afternoon concert in the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens. featuring ten-man ska machine Bombskare and jazz funk purveyors Junction Pool. There will also be numerous debates and

workshops with internationally renowned campaigners on subjects ranging from climate change to slavery and
international funding for health. as well as a regular fair
trade market. Participating organisations include ()xfam. Amnesty International. Jubilee Scotland. liriends of the Iiarth and Stop the War. All events are free with the exception of the World Music Party. which takes place at the Bongo (‘lub on Thursday Zl June (tickets Elll—L‘IZ) at 8pm and features (‘uban sensations Septeto 'I‘ipico de Tivoli.

WATER PISTOLS AT DAWN
I Aspiring assassins are sought for Killer, an 18-day, 24/7 water pistol tournament taking place across the UK and Ireland throughout the summer. The Glasgow leg of the tournament runs from Sunday 15 July-Wednesday 1 August and costs £25 to enter. At the start of the tournament, players will be met by the ‘Boss’ and handed an envelope containing their target details. The estimated 400 participants must then hunt down their opponents using water pistols/balloons or any alternative water projecting delivery system, wearing any disguise they see fit. The aim of the game is to be the last dry person standing to collect the cash prize. This year’s event is based on a similar, smaller scale event, which took place in London last year. Document. the only UK festival dedicated to raising awareness of international human rights lSSLleS, is Currently requesting entries from both established and emerging documentary filmmakers for its fifth annual event. The festival. which takes place in October in Glasgow. will screen a large and diverse selection of documentary films as well as hosting debates and workshops covering a broad spectrum of international human rights issues from immigration and asylum to miscarriages of justice. poverty. social exclusion and war and conflict.
Previous highlights of the festivals have included A Certain Liberation by Yasmine Kabir, which focused on the living martyrdom of Gurodasi Mondol whose entire family was massacred during the Bangladeshi liberation. and Nikolaus Geyrhalter's stunning. austere black- and-white film Pr/pyal. which explores the tragic aftermath of a nuclear disaster for the eponymous Russian town.
