Claire Mitchell talks to Glasgow-based artist Patrick Jameson about his work Claire Mitchell Do you feel the Glasgow landscape has a specific influence on your work?
Patrick Jameson Not really. l guess you are referring to my work ‘While we sleep, we are awake somewhere else“. which has been taken as a look at post-industrial cityscapes. In past works i have examined and isolated certain ‘industrial' buildings and objects. but more because I was applying industrial materials and processes in their making and each one had a specific historical significance. Recently, I have moved towards examining psychological states. using architecture as a vessel through which I can explore and reflect upon, among other things. our relationship with technology is almost spiritual.
CM The work you are showing at lntermedia is centred around a church in Iceland. Tell us a little about this.
PJ ‘Circular Machine' is an installation using projected animation and sound. and is based on Hallgrimskirkja Church in Reykjavik. The projections, which are on floating screens facing each other, depict both the interior and exterior of the building but also reveal the process of making the 3D model from which the church was built. I don't want to make something that suggests transcendence or spirituality. I based this work on a church largely because of their widely perceived symbolism as vessels of spirituality. This work is more about the creation and exploration of a kind of secular temple to humanity. CM You created your own soundscape based on ‘Music for Airports' by Brian Eno. Why?
PJ The piece ‘1/2’ on that album is made solely from recordings of voices. I liked the idea that a voice can be recorded and played back in layers to create something polyphonic like a choir. but by just one person in a studio rather than gathering trained singers and coordinating them.
