Terence Davies’ stunning 1988 film memoir about his formative years lived under the shadow of an oppressive alcoholic patriarch in postwar Liverpool gets a short outing in a beautiful restored print. As brutal, heartbreaking and vital as it was on its release this film deserves to be revisited or seen for the first time, if only to prove that low budget British cinema was once the envy of the world.
