1 We’re talking about icons here OK, one icon, namely Debbie Harry. The rest of ‘em could be picked from a supermarket checkout queue for all anyone cares. but Harry is a worldwide musical icon, and rightly so. She was the sexiest thing to appear on Top of the Pops for about ten years. and damn, she knew it. Has she still got it? You betcha.
2 They invented disco OK, that’s a lie, but they did bring it to the attention of the pop masses with the seminal ‘Heart of Glass‘ hit single.
3 They invented rap, too OK, that's also clearly a lie. but they did bring it to the attention of the pop masses with 1981 hit single ‘Rapture'. a song which saw Harry rapping in hilarious style. namechecking Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash years before anyone outside New York had heard of them.
4 They might have a scrap Never the most predictable of bands. previous Blondie outings have sometimes been stroppy affairs, most recently their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. which saw a very public spat between Harry and two former members. Classy.
5 The hits! The hits! Just an astounding roll call of fantastic pop tunes: ‘Denis‘, ‘Hanging on the Telephone’. 'Heart of Glass’. ‘Dreaming', ‘One Way or Another’, ‘Sunday Girl', ‘Union City Blue'. ‘Call Me’, ‘Atomic' and plenty others. Need any more reason? No. (Doug Johnstone)
