EDINBURGH YOUTH ORCHESTRA WITH JULIAN LLOYD WEBBER Paisley Abbey. Tue 7 Aug

One of the UK’s top youth orchestras, Edinburgh Youth Orchestra understandably has an impressive roster of professional artists keen to work with its talented young musicians. But this year it is the stuff that dream teams are made of as the 100-strong group welcome not only RSNO Principal Guest Conductor, Garry Walker, but also world-famous cellist, Julian Lloyd Webber to their six-day Scottish tour. After opening the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a first for EYO. they then notch up another first in making their Perth Concert Hall debut before the tour’s final stop in the magnificent Paisley Abbey.

It is of vital importance to Lloyd Webber that he plays with orchestras such as EYO, of which he has also just become a Patron. ‘I love working with young people,’ he says. ‘They have a tremendous enthusiasm for the music. Of course they very much depend on who’s working with them and Garry Walker is an excellent conductor who gets enormous respect from the players.’

An ex-member of EYO (another cellist), Walker is almost young enough to be one of the band. But, says Lloyd Webber, ‘One of the first things I noticed was the great discipline he maintains in the rehearsal room. He gets on with the job and the orchestra plays for him.’

In the year that marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Edward Elgar, it is perhaps inevitable that they'll be playing the ever popular Elgar Cello Concerto. ‘lt's played worldwide by all cellists and we all love it,’ says Lloyd Webber. ‘I never tire of it and every performance is different. Fascinatingly, it got off to quite a slow start and really only became popular in the 605. It’s a personal, intense, deep and lovely statement by a man who was near the end of his life.’ (Carol Main)
