68 THE LIST 6—20 890 2007

Born in the US, but raised in Australia, John Butler and his two cohorts, drummer Michael Barker and bass player Shannon Birchall, travel down a musical route which touches on Butler’s musical heritage - he plays his grandfather’s National guitar. But they shoot off at tangents. taking in the kind of sunshine vibe Jack Johnson excels at, as well as moments of jazz virtuosity, folksy melody, reggae earthiness and even shades of Ani DiFranco’s politicised, acoustic ingenuity. Butler has gained a huge global following without permeating the pages of Heat or compromising his musical intentions. ABC. Glasgow. Tue 18 80;).
