I Sir Thomas Allen, the powerhouse singer-turned- director behind Scottish Opera‘s
latest production, Barber of Seville
has been chosen by Woody Allen to play the lead in his debut stage opera next year. The acclaimed American director responsible for such movie gold as Annie Hall and Manhattan plans to stage Gianni Schicchi next September in LA.

I Ringo Starr is to headline the opening of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture Year in 2008. The Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and Ian Broudie from The Lightning Seeds will also make an appearance. After much speculation surrounding the future of the
event, Brookside and Hollyoaks creator Phil Redmond has now taken on creative responsibility for the project. In other Beatles- related news Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese has signed up to make a documentary about the life of former Beatle George Harrison. Harrison’s widow Olivia will help produce the film.
