Job

Managing Director, Material Marketing

My business partner Spence and I left our jobs at the end of 2002 and the company was ‘born‘ in January 2003.

Being the MD pretty much everything really working

on strategy and planning. creating programmes of staff development. overseeing all financial activity inc. planning for business growth and working at all our events (or as many as I can manage being pregnant at the moment!)

The events themselves -- all the hard work in the build up is totally worth it when you're experiencing the rush of the activity going live at T in the Park or Hampden for example. The sense of job satisfaction you get from knowing you played a small part in making something happen that an audience has really enjoyed. Also working as part of a team with the best clients and staff in the country is a buzz. I‘m very privileged to do what I do and get paid for it.

I started out in music PR year's ago. working for various companies and labels in London and got exposure to events that way - helping out at the Mercury Music Prize. The

Verve's Haigh Hall gig or looking after artists at Glastonbury for example. I found I loved that side of the industry and moved into working solely on events like Homelands which led to working with brands like Ericsson. Orange and then an agency called KLP where I eventually got promoted to work on Tennent's up in Edinburgh with Spence and the rest as they say, is history...

It’s something everybody says but when I started out I offered to work for free at anything and everything I could, made tea. cut newspapers etc, basically made myself useful to as many people as possible. This kind of experience was invaluable to have on my CV and was always the thing I got asked about most at interviews when I started applying for jobs. The same principle applies when you do start working -— get involved

in job shadowing, assist other teams or departments where you can, share your experiences. ask questions and above all listen, watch and learn as much as you can every day.

Still running Material with Spence and with the same drive and passion I do today. The company will have grown in size but still have retained the same ethos and atmosphere we started out with.

Working on event's like T means that I don’t often get to see toomanybands.buttherehavebeenafewamazingmoments over the years. Highlights for me have been Brian Wilson headlining the Pet Sounds Arena this year. seeing Sonic Youth for the first time ever and my ultimate moment has to be my hero's New Order saying “this is the best festival we’ve ever played” live on the Main Stage.
