Garrison Keillor isn't concerned with shattering the earth. opting instead to detail the minutest of manoeuvrings within the human condition. The core subject matter of his latest Lake Wobegon tale. the sudden death of a fun-loving pensioner. is handled with such deft and warm hands that you could at times be forgiven for forgetting that the passing of a beloved relative can be one of life's toughest trials. Light humour and delightful characterisation are.
as always. at the heart of Keillor’s little dramas.
Upstanding Lutheran Evelyn Peterson dies in bed. having warned her angel of death to back off til she had finished her book. Having survived a deeply unhappy marriage to a Norwegian sailor, Evelyn had grabbed a second chance and was living it up with a man called Raoul Olsen behind the backs of her stuffy family. When Evelyn‘s daughter Barbara finds the stark evidence of a very different person to the one she had displayed before the public. it both splits and gels members of the clan. In particular, her last wishes and request for a non-religious funeral causes serious angst among the flock. Throughout the book with the aid of her found correspondence. Evelyn can almost be heard hooting from the grave. For those Keillor fans feeling undernourished by the lack of a Lake Wobegon tale since 2001, it’s unlikely they'll feel let down here. For the uninitiated, this is as good a place as any to dip their
