OLD TOWN ADVENTURE PACK

With the Castle at one end and Holyrood Palace at the other, Edinburgh's Royal Mile is one of the most famous streets in the world. But although the entire Old Town is steeped in history, knowing what to look for inbetween those two landmarks can be a little trickier.

Which is why the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh Council Museums and Galleries and Edinburgh World Heritage joined forces to produce the Old Town Adventure Pack. Aimed at families with children aged 7-12, these colourful packs feature a fold-out map, child-friendly guides and stickers to

show you‘ve completed the trail.

“The pack is a fun starting point for families to explore the crooked closes and mysterious wynds of the area,‘ says the Scottish Storytelling Centre’s Programme Manager, Esther Blackburn. ‘As well as a way of finding out a little about the Old Town’s historic characters, stories and incredible

architecture.’

Created with both tourists and Edinburgh residents in mind, the pack sends you journeying along the Royal Mile, taking in several (mostly free) venues such as The People’s Story Museum, Museum of Childhood, Brass Rubbing Centre and Canongate Kirk. The first in a series covering the tales, myths, characters and vivid history of the capital, the pack is available from the Storytelling Centre or Edinburgh Council Museum shops priced £3.50.

‘We hope the pack will help bring the Old Town and its history alive for younger people,‘ says Blackburn. ‘As well as giving them suggestions for places to see and things to do in an easily walkable distance.’ (Kelly Apter)
