' This fantastic travelling BFI season presents the Tm relatively unknown (in the West) work of this remarkable Japanese filmmaker. Uchida was a prolific genre filmmaker who made almost 50 films between 1922 and his death in 1970. Unlike the more famous Ozu and Kurosawa, Uchida was not a classicist - his work is better compared to filmmakers such as Sam Fuller, Budd Boetticher and Anthony Mann in the way he approached generic plots with stylistic intelligence and a personal slant. The unavailability of his films in Europe meant he was never championed by the critics of Cahiers du Cinema but this selection of Westerns, melodramas and character studies should go some way to correcting that. Of particular interest is his 1955 anti-US imperialism drama A Hole of My Own Making (pictured) and 1957’s The Horse Boy, a tragicomic satire of feudal Japan.
