So what (.loez'. your job actually involve? Festival City Theatres Trust is responsible for managing two of the country‘s major venues -- the King's and Festival Theatres in Edinburgh. A not-for-protit organization, we are Scotland’s largest independent theatre management and, while commercially focused, we are artistically led. My role is to oversee several departments — Marketing/Press; Box Office; Education/Audience Development and Sponsorship. Basically I try to encourage as many people as possible to attend shows at both theatres (putting bums on seats).
Bowl/V101 uL‘ Aspects? Best: Seeing 1800 primary children cheer The Snowman as if he was a pop star. That and the King's Panto; getting to see so many shows, even if some of the time it's just a chance to sit still in the dark for a few hours! Worst: too much time spent trapped in budget spreadsheets.
What (lid you do Imioru you started this job? I worked for five years at BBC Worldwide in London as Group Marketing Manager. Before that. I worked in London, Oxford and Reading for touring companies. a theatre and a local authority.
iii/lint"; tho best way to not a job like yours? Nowadays there are lots of vocational degree courses around the arts and leisure but I think there are two things to do. It always helps if you've worked in a theatre (box office, ushering) but I would always encourage people to go off and get some commercial, hard-nosed marketing experience.
Wherr- (Io you see yourself in ten years. time? Hopefully still in Edinburgh, the exasperated and middle-aged dad of a teenage boy.
Wth are you most looking forward to in 2008? Getting my head around when school holidays are; doing more camping trips; more great shows from the National Theatre of Scotland; the return of Sunshine on Leith (The Proclaimers' musical); having my Marketing and Communications Manager start.
