FIFE JAZZ FESTIVAL

While Fife has produced its share of jazz players. led by the redoubtable Joe Temperley and fostered by Richard Michael's work with the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra. the Kingdom has always lacked a focused jazz event. Edinburgh- based Assembly Direct aim to rectify that omission with the inaugural Fife
Jazz Festival.
The new festival comes in the wake of the successful classical-oriented East Neuk Festival in the area. Roger Spence. co-director of Assembly Direct. pointed out that the organisation already knows from its own promotions that ‘many Fife people travel to listen to jazz, especially to Dundee and Edinburgh. and we are delighted to have an opportunity to bring jazz to their doorstep.’
Concerts will take place in eight centres: Anstruther, Burntisland, Cupar. Dunbog, Dunfermline. Glenrothes. Kirkcaldy and St Andrews. The programme is an eclectic mix of styles aimed at a broad-ranging appeal, including trad jazz star Chris Barber. the high-octane hybrid that is Salsa Celtica. gypsy guitar virtuoso Angelo Debarre, singer Lianne Carroll. and a seasoning of local talent, including Angie King, Grace Black. Dave Batchelor and the
aforesaid Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra.
The final night headliners are the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. Their concert at the Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline is the culmination of three gigs that weekend (the others are at the Queen‘s Hall. Edinburgh. on Friday and the RSAMD, Glasgow, on Saturday). The SNJO have amassed a diverse repertoire since their launch in the mid-90$. but this latest programme is an
unusualone.
The family-friendly ‘Jazz Toons‘ presentation will feature jazz versions of music from popular cartoons such as The Lion King, Shark Tale and The Flintstones (its famous theme already has a jazz connection: it is based on Gershwin‘s ‘I Got Rhythm' chord changes), with guest singer Maureen
