INTERVIEW

Alexander Kennedy talks to Paulina Sandberg, one of the co- founders of Echo, an Edinburgh- based artists’ initiative

Alexander Kennedy What is Echo?

Peullna Sandberg Echo is co- founded by two Edinburgh-based artists, Tonya McMullan. originally from Northern Ireland and myself. originally from Sweden. We are both a few years out of Art College and have been showing our work at exhibitions around Scotland. Our contemporary art practices include video. site-specific installations and performance. Echo wants to give emerging artists the chance to create contemporary exhibitions in non-traditional spaces. We hope to show site-specific work, encourage collaborations and work in any media that seems interesting and suits the spaces we choose. At the moment we are planning to show installations, performance. sculpture. video. sound work, drawing and painting.

AK What do you think Echo will add to the art scene in Edinburgh and Scotland generally?

PS We are going to seek out spaces that have never been used before as venues for art and look for artists who we feel would best respond to the venue/place. We anticipate inquisitive visitors who perhaps don't visit art galleries regularly to stumble across an echo project and be seduced by the location and the chance to observe a behind the scenes look at the world in the context of art, hopefully widening audiences and enc0uraging folk to look for art where they have never found it before.

AK Can you give us some information about the Current exhibition?

PS Starting Point is the first of Echo's projects and takes place in a hotel bedroom. The Point Hotel has given Echo the use of one of their bedrooms for one evening for the participating artists to make interventions within the hotel settings. Artists involved in the piece include the two Echo founders. as well as Edinburgh-based Japanese artist Takahiro lwasaki. There will also be a collaboration between Echo and performance poet JL Williams.

I Starting Point, Point Hotel. Edinburgh, Wed 73 Feb.

An exhibition of paintings by internationally acclaimed artists, including David Bomberg, Walter Sickert, Alex Katz and Andre Derain. The work will be shown in conjunction with work by contemporary Scottish painters such as Sandy Guy in order to create a ‘preposterous art history‘, where work can be linked through correspondences and connotation.
