ADELE

Classic Grand, Glasgow, Fri 1 Feb 0...

Dovetailing two phenomena, namely the fast track route to fame Via Myfipace and the new Crop of ‘60s— style female singers triggered by the combined forces of Mark Ponson and Amy Winehouse. Adele is most definitely a very current kind of star. But from opener ‘Daydr'eamer' (the album is played in order and in its entirety) it's clear that her voice harks back to a different era together.

A timeless powerhouse of a vocal that's part Aretha and part Dusty wrth an occasional nod to Kirsty MacColl, it soars effortlessly up to the high notes and prompts boots of approval. including 'YOu're a genius!‘, to which she drily replies; You should see my (ECSE; results'. Whether anyone should become this famous this quickly is or Will to debate; underneath her (It intident singing voice the Wide—eyed teenager comes through and she seems; ecstatic that anyone's turned up at all, 'The album's geing to be number one tomorrowl' she announces. as if we've all known her for years. and wrth a cackle that would put Barbara Windsor to shame. ‘And I'm gOing to get proper drunk.‘ (Emma Newlandsl

THE APPLE SCRUFFS 13th Note, Glasgow, Fri 1 Feb .0.

The original Apple scruffs used to hang ar0und waiting to meet The Beatles. and tonight the devotion was s

intense that you could have been forgiven for thinking that the door to the 13th Note was a portal to the fab four playing at the Cavern Club at the height of their fame.

Rammed to capacrty. the air was soon as swelteringly humid as the tunes were frenetic. the crowd of loyal followers turning what is an intimate venue at the best of times into either a heavrng moshpit or crowded dancefloor. depending if you're a boy or a girl. Or how much cider you'd had.

That these Glaswegians crte Primal Scream. The Stone Roses and OaSis as influences comes as no surprise. combining raw. rough around the edges rock'n'roll wrth a smart. belligerent swagger and fused to hummable Fratelli-style melodies. But it's another band on their list, The Libertines, that seem to have been the biggest inspiration. both in terms of breakneck tunes and the dedication they inspire. which The Scruffs push to t t on tne hysteria scale.

GALLows‘ ABC. Glasgow. Sat 23 Feb

If you're under the misapprehension British rock was in trouble you obviously haven‘t heard Gallows. the most exciting band Britain has to offer at the moment. a snarling feral injection of true hardcore and raw punk energy. Frontman Frank Carter is a ball of rage who explodes on contact with the stage. also grabbing an unlikely top spot on NME‘s 2007 Cool List.

The band have been gigging non-stop since their phenomenal debut. Orchestra of Wolves was released last year. It's a record that packs a visceral punch on tracks like ‘In the Belly of a Shark' and ‘Abandon Ship‘. However, it was their team-up with Lethal Bizzle for a cover of The Ruts' ‘Staring at the Rude Bois' that got them the most mainstream attention.

‘We're not a commercial-sounding band. we never wanted mainstream success, we did it for ourselves.‘ explains guitarist Laurent Barnard. ‘We‘ve made a really aggressive record, but even if they don‘t like the music, people have been coming down to the shows and saying: “That's one of the best shows I've ever seen”, or “the best show I've ever seen." We give it 200% every night and they appreciate that. We bleed for our art. literally.‘

It’s a wild show with Carter at the epicentre of a maelstrom of bodies as buzzsaw guitars reverberate around the arena. ‘The music drives us, the crowd drives us and if the crowd don’t give a fuck that drives us even more cause we can show them what we’re about.’ says Barnard. ‘Being on stage is a release from all the shit that's pissing you off. You get wound up and when you’re on that stage you can get all that aggression out.'(Henry Northmore)
