The best new nights in town. This fortnight: Backstage

Resldonu and guests A rotating line-up of regular Club Noir DJs. to keep every night feeling fresh and special.

Music policy In keeping with Noir's ethos. a cross-section of the sexiest music from the 19203 right up to today's pop charts. What they say 'We have a lot of fans of Club Noir, who adore it and can't wait for their next fix. Because it's so huge and takes so much work to organise we only hold it every three months or so.’ says Tina Warren, promoter of Glasgow's burlesque extravaganza Club Noir, and its new. smaller sister club. 'Backstage is smaller-scale but more regular; basically Club Noir without the burlesque stage shows. There will still be a strict dress code. so people can get really dressed-up. and the crowd will be the same bunch of friendly, glamorous. outgoing people we're used to at Club Noir. It'll be like a fabulous house party. I'm very excited about it.’ What we say Club Noir has established itself as one of the most popular clubs in Glasgow. Indeed. Warren reports that the last event sold out four days before the show. and fans had to resort to eBay for tickets. More than that. however. it's set a benchmark for quality, with a deeper understanding of what is teasingly sexy rather than just a bit too forward than all its burlesque competition. As Warren points out. the crowd helps make it what it is. so the fact that Backstage is housed at the elegant. 350-capacity Winchester Club should ensure that CN's fans can enjoy a more regular fix of fabulousness. ‘The same thing only now' runs the tagline for Autechre’s ninth and latest album Quaristice. Whoever came up with that one was having a good day at the office, for the album continues the Warp-ensconced duo's time-served reputation for free-roaming electronic experimentation.

Bob Brown, who formed the duo in Rochdale with Sean Booth more than 20 years ago, reports that this album’s genesis differed from Autechre's usual working style. The pair’s studio was in storage as Booth was moving house at the time, so they attempted to make one final recording of the live set they were using at the time. ‘We wanted to get it out the way and move onto

something new,’ says Brown. ‘But we ended up coming up with so many new pieces of music based on the live set that these actually became the new album.‘

Their vintage and penchant for boffinry means that Autechre have helped pioneer a particular type of electronic live performance. ‘There was a time when the ideal was to create a live set you'd just need to press play for, though it wasn‘t long before we started tinkering.’ says Brown. ‘We‘d play in old gas chambers in Holland where the venue would dictate how we had to approach the set. So we've gained the experience, over the years, where we can go careering off in different directions and hope to still fall on our feet.‘ The only thing that really remains the same about Autechre, of course, is that they continue to push against the future.
