some of the best-known films in the history of American avant-garde cinema. Unsurprisingly, things kick off with a selection of shorts by surrealist filmmaker and theorist Maya Deren (pictured), including her three most famous pieces, Meshes in the Afternoon (made with co-director Alexander Hammid in 1943), At Land (1944) and A Study in Choreography for Camera (1945). Later programmes include a rare, complete screening of Michael Snow‘s seminal hypnotic journey across a single room, Wavelength, and a selection of films by underground cinema‘s greatest evangelist, Stan Brakhage. Dr Kim Knowles of Edinburgh University will introduce each screening.
