Although mainly shot in New Zealand to facilitate the involvement of the Weta Digital special-effects house. the film is firmly set in WWII-era Scotland. The bizarre 50 or so vignettes that constitute Andersson‘s first feature since 2000‘s apocalyptic Songs from the Second Floor drop a traditional narrative for a series of precisely framed tableaux where the boundaries between dreams and reality are freely blurred. Scotland’s oldest, biggest and best international horror film festival opens its doors again for gore aficionados everywhere. This year’s programme will be topped and tailed by Scottish-themed horrors. Doomsday (pictured), Neil Dog Soldiers Marshall’s new apocalyptic horror was filmed north of the border as was Steve Barker’s WWII bunker horror Outpost. Both will be reviewed in the next issue of The List. Other highlights include a complete 35mm screenings of Dario Argento’s Three Mother’s trilogy (Suspiria, Inferno and Mother of Tears) and Matthew Hope’s much anticipated zombie flick The Vanguard.
