Nu rave? What a joke, it’s just a pity the East London scenesters don’t seem to get it. Here to show them the error of their ways and release some genuinely innovative new music in the process are Little Rock Records’ Niall and Boag. Their NORAVE compilation is all about diverse dance music you wouldn’t hear in your average club . . . oh, and to poke fun at a few pretentious types along the way. Splendid.

l-leckling can make or break a gig. In this case. it's all fuel to an explosion in-waiting 7— this Welsh trio's almost fanatical following know exactly which buttons to push. and Future of the Left are a band that operate best under pressure.

One thing that Andy Falkous in particular hates is mention of his previous act. Thus. a call of simple ‘lvlclusky' is enough to elicit a terse "tn/reng band. male from the legendarily tetchy singer.

Blue touchpaper lit. heckler retired to the burgeoning mosh-pit. Falkous and pals are wound up and ready to go and go they do. with a display of l)arely-controllerl aggression. the trio screaming. shouting. and slashing and hammering at their instruments as if they'd been wronged by them in a preVIous eXistence. But each explosion of noise contains a malevolent riff. an intensely rhythmic splatter of drums. Even when they swap keyboard for guitar :t's synthpop Via dentist's drill - jabbing. jerky rhythms that insinuate themselves in the brain. When they finally tear apart the drum kit during their encore. it’s cheers, not ieers that are ringing in their ears. Something no one would dare heckle. lStuart lvchughi

‘\f‘.’illkommen, bienyenue. welcomef' The Deutsch kitsch ii.usical number from Cabaret is the perfect aural backdrop for IAMX lthe demonic brainchild of ex-Sneaker Pimp Chris Corneri to take to the stage. King Tut's usual leery. beeiy and laddy rumpus. where indie rock is met with affectionate aggression is gone and a very different type of entertainment reigns: a sexed-up. electro—gothic cabaret.

Corner or should that be KM and hrs accumulated circus freaks put on a three-ring show akin to The Dresden Dolls after a high NRC: dance make— over. which is more theatrical and pop than Sneaker Pimps ever were. MiXing one track into the next for a non-stop groove. what can sound lacklustre on their two albums comes alive on stage with operatic vocals piercing taut beats and woo/y melodies.

They demand the utmost reverence from the eager crowd before paying it back with an encore of 'President'. a hypnotic. anthemic call- to-arms that positions X as a dark messiah. On a rainy Monday night in Scotland. he declares ‘For all you lonely boys I will be president' and audience members of all genders are transported. sweaty and smitten at his sheer chut/pah. lSu/anne Blacki

They should be well practiced at this. Follox'xing their well-received 200:3 debut Cuts Across the Land. London's Duke Spirit flew across the

pond to play the odd gig or 28:3. Their

follow—up. Neptune. is conseguently a collection of propulsive road rock. shot through with singer Liela Moss' restless waits and reflections. both wry and wistful. Fittingly. the two openers tonight -— 'Send a Little Love loken' and the layered guitars and ascending chorus of ‘Lasso' tear off the grid.

There's a visual as well as aural link to the Mary Chain in the male back line. with a definite penchant for voluminous hair and guitar. But Moss 7 she of the perfectly fringed sandy hair —- is the focus. throwing her body into shapes and pulling hand actions out of her pockets. and with a bewitching. throaty yet lilting. glottal- stopped voice that echoes Grace Slick. A rousing set peaks with ‘This Ship Was Built to Last'. its rhythmic riff warped by distorted slide guitar and rising to a glorious crescendo. and ‘Step of the Walk'. which channels Sons and Daughters' vampish (30s girl pop through 70s heayy blues and is delivered with Justifiable swagger. The MySpace of this buoyant Caledonian guartet has them listed as originating in Glasgow. Fife and Tokyo the first two are true but the Jokey addition at the end would be better changed to Madchester. Junol's mission. The List suspects. is to calibrate their rise precisely with the passing of new rave. and to dive into the as-yet-unheralde(l baggy revival as it unfolds. COuId The Twang yet sound ahead of their time?

The shirts are sports-casual and the loans are edging towards flared. but the livery of new rave is also unashamedly present and correct. Glowsticks are brandished and worn in spectacle shapes. while the band live up to their promise of 'more percussion than you've probably heard in a while'. Amidst the mai'acas and tambourines lies the voice of collaborator and Bis frontwoman Manda Bin. guesting in person on ‘These Boys are Athletes' and 'Smoke and Mirrors'. and oddly as a recorded track on the Sesame Street- sampling 'Jet Set Juno". lt's chirpy and twee. and the dumb. Paisley— patterned tun of The Soup Drag0ns is here. although the epic hedonism of Flowered Up's ‘\y’Veekender' also finds itsef occasionally invoked. iDavid Pollockl
