3}: Plug 2008 Creativity flourishes at the RSAMD. This year’s Plug, the annual celebration of music by students composers, features no less than forty first performances. Some are solos. some are for ensemble. some have crazy names, but all are new. RSAMD, Glasgow, Mon 28 Apr-Fri 2 May.

3: Peter Gregson: SPEM There are 40 different parts to Thomas Tallis’ masterpiece Spem in A/ium, written by the composer in the late 16th century for 40 human voices. Peter Gregson has transposed and pre-recorded 39 of the vocal lines using just solo cello, and plays the final one live in what can only be described as a highly unusual and unique performance. It will also be broadcast live over the internet. Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh, Fri 25 Apr.

Cappella Nova: Viva Victoria! One of the Renaissance period’s finest composers, Tomas Luis de Victoria is a joy to sing and to listen to. His 12-part mass Laetatus sum makes magical use of three groups of voices intertwining in beautiful and exquisitely written vocal lines. And not a cello or pre—record in sight (see above).
