Diversions

":3" (sh-q“ . --

This brand new festival of experimental film, curated by the University of Edinburgh’s film studies department, is impressive in its range and scope. Organised over four days in loosely

.§*"';t7'l"1. 7 1 '

historical or thematic showcases and introduced by filmmakers, academics and distributors of experimental films, Diversions begins with an overview of the experimental film form from the 19205 to the present day with rare screenings of Stan Brakhage’s Mothlight and Peter Kubelka’s influential one-minute short Schwechater among others. There will also be focus on the work of contemporary queen bee, French avant-gardist Frederique Devaux and legendary and prolific Philadelphian video artist maverick Peter Rose, both of whom will be on hand to discuss their work. Other showcases include works inspired by the May ’68 student riots and new British experimental shorts. Things are rounded up nicely with a history lesson on New York celluloid experimentalism from the 19605 to the present day. With free talks, round table discussions, ‘improv noise acts’ (on the opening night) and reduced and special ticket deals, this is a commendable attempt to make the arcane accessible. www.diversionsfilmfestivaI.co.uk I Fi/mhouse, Edinburgh; Department of Architecture, University of Edinburgh, Chambers Street.
