PREVIEW CLUB NIGHT BANG BANG

The Ivy, Glasgow, Thu 19 Jun

g M

Ladyfest has a lot to answer for. The annual celebration of female achievement in the arts drew enthusiastic crowds to its club nights and gigs when it pitched its tent in Glasgow last month. Once the circus had rolled out of town, however. local Djs Annie Liebfraumilch and Sandradio (aka Anne Kastner and Sandra Gordon) suddenly noticed the yawning gap in the market for a permanent girl-centred night in the Dear Green Place. ‘Ladyfest has always pushed music and bands by girls that are less represented by other club nights,’ says Kastner. ‘We saw how much women were really into these alternative female-centred nights, loved them ourselves, and thought it would be great to get something similar

going on a monthly basis.’

The result is Bang Bang, which launches in the intimate surrounds of The Ivy’s basement this fortnight. ‘lt’s not really a regular disco venue so it’s nice to have a clear space that we can stamp our identity on and transform for the night,’ she adds. ‘We wanted to get a space where it would be easy for people to meet each other, more like a large house party than an

anonymous cavern.’

While the Bang Bang DJs will play mainly indie. fem-punk and electro, revellers can also expect a fair smattering of pop classics from Kate Bush and Nancy Sinatra as well as newer bands such as The Violets and Mika Miko - even out-and-out eccentrics such as Yoko Ono and Gudrun Gut.

For Kastner, the biggest challenge involved in setting up and running a women’s club night is overcoming the perception that gay or queer women’s nightlife is merely an add-on to the gay men’s scene.

‘The main hurdle is getting the word out and persuading girls that there are fun alternatives to mainstream gay and straight clubs and that they can dress up or down, dance or do whatever they want in a space that is totally

dedicated to them.’ (Allan Radcliffe)
