How did you get that job?

Name Kirsty Ferguson

Job Title ln-house jewellery designer Company Laings of Glasgow

When did you start your job? I have worked for Laings of Glasgow for three years now. I started working with the company part time when I was studying at Glasgow School of Art. When I was deep into my degree show. they were so supportive. They continued to be really interested in the work I was doing after I graduated, and always asked me to show them what I was working on. I was thrilled when they asked me to be their in- house designer in July 2007. It’s always nice to have someone be a fan of what you do.

So what does your job actuafty involve? As I create bespoke pieces for Laings of Glasgow, I dedicate a lot of my time to one-to-one consultations with customers. I draw up their ideas, and then when the final design has been chosen, I bring it to life with precious metals and diamonds in the studio.

Best: / worst aspects? I love being able to give clients that perfect and unique piece of jewellery. However, I have to admit that sometimes it’s very difficult to give those diamonds up!

What did you do before you started this job? I studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Glasgow School of Art for four years and then did a spot of free- lance design work before becoming the designer for Laings of Glasgow.

What's the best way to get a job iike yours? If you have that creative bent, get onto a jewellery design course at an art college. Studying the actual craft of jew- ellery is invaluable, if you know how the piece of jew- ellery is made then it is easier to design. Then it’s just a Ease of getting out there and getting your designs

nown.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time? Definitely still designing! I would love my designs to be recognised all across the country. By then I would also quite like to have a proper collection of my very own dia- monds - bought by someone else of course!

and finally . . .

Which European city has the best bling?

I go all over Europe looking for perfect diamonds, and we especially spend a lot of time in Antwerp, but I would have to say that for me, Glasgow still rocks!
