Some of Edinburgh's eateries are doing their bit for charity this

month. Anna Millar discovers why

here is surely never a better reason to indulge than when it’s for charity. a mindset many Scottish restaurants will be hoping for this month. For the whole of October. a selection of eateries in [idinburgh will join hundreds of restaurants. gastropubs. cafes and bars across the UK and invite their customers to light hunger simply by eating out as part of a Restaurants Against Hunger scheme. Capital connoisseurs include lglu Cafe. La Garrigue. Rafael‘s. Valvona & (‘rolla VinCafe and Vintners Rooms. liach eaterie decides what their individual contribution will be. whether it be donating part of their takings from selected dishes. adding a small optional donation to the bill or hosting a special event Last year's Restaurants Against Hunger raised over £3()().()()() in the UK. with all funds going directly to support the vital work of humanitarian charity. Restaurants Against Hunger was launched in l‘)‘)8 by Action Against Hunger to raise vital funds for the worldwide fight against hunger by inviting food lovers all over the UK to help fight poverty. and to coincide with World Food Day on In October.

As if more incentive were needed. a child dies of hunger every five seconds. Just £24 can make a huge difference. providing full treatment for a severely malnourished child and even £1 can help a farmer produce enough rice for his family for four days.

CASH IN THE CAR BOOT I A set of original drawings by Charles Rennie Mackintosh will be auctioned at Bonhams in Edinburgh on Wed 15 Oct, and are expected to fetch £4000-6,000. The vendor bought a bag of items for £10 at a Glasgow car boot sale. The drawings are preliminary designs for Auchenbothie Lodge, Kilmacolm, Renfewshire, designed by Mackintosh in 1900-1901, to provide a gatehouse for a mansion.

VISUAL ARTIST Martin Boyce has been selected to represent Scotland at the 2009 Venice Biennale - the worid’s largest international showcase for contemporary visual arts. The presentation is curated by Dundee Contemporary Arts and is the first solo show to be presented.

WORDS TO MUSIC I Scottish Opera has announced their much- anticipated line-up for next year’s Five: 15 series, which sees some of Scotland’s finest writers and music makers collaborate on a short opera. This year’s team includes director Nicholas Bone and composer David Fennessy; playwright Zinnie Harris and Edinburgh-based composer John Harris; Glasgow writer/GP Dr Margaret McCartney and returning composer Gareth Williams; Herald writer Amy Parker and composer/lecturer Dr Martin Dixon; novelist Louise Welsh and composer Stuart MacRae.

In a similar format to last year’s offerings, the operas will explore a variety of subject matters, themes, styles and music. Scottish Opera general director Alex Reedijk said: ‘In selecting these five new pieces we have been spoilt for choice.’
