: -~ Freelance fashion stylist

l’m happily self-employed. I went freelance almost two years ago.

models for editorial shoots. fashion campaigns and catwalks. I work closely with fashion photographer Stephen Kearney to select models and locations for shoots. it involves a lot of running around collecting stock and it certainly builds up the muscles!

I've just finished Fashion Aid at Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow doing one-to-one consultations with the public; it was great to help people feel good about themselves. I love being part of a team that creates beautiful and inspirational images. The downside is that I work away a lot, so I miss my fiance. Also, if something goes wrong on a shoot - the product doesn’t show up, you’re on an outside shoot and it starts bucketing down - you have to solve that problem quickly on the spot. My assistant Mhairi is fabulous at helping me out with things like that.

worked as a visual merchandiser and product developer for Topshop, travelling up and down the UK, installing windows and helping to design the looks for the mannequins.

art college degree is a great start. I went 0 dinburgh College of Art. Both ECA and Glasgow School of Art are great for fashion and textile driven courses. The next step is to find established stylists and ask if you can assist them, usually you won’t get paid. Get a portfolio of your work together and get it seen! It’s a lot of hard work but it’s really worth it in the end.

Get a thick skin; in my indu try you have to be quite resilient. At the start I couldn’t understand why people were being so harsh. They weren’t; there is just a real urgency in my job that you might not see in others. The fashion industry is always a couple of seasons ahead and fast paced, so it’s important not to take things personally.

I’m really excited to see the new Elements at Livingston, Ortak and Schuh campaigns roll out, as I worked on all of them it’s been a busy few months! I have a couple of campaigns and shoots to start planning and discussions will soon get going on the Fashion Awards for 2009. It’s not all work and no play though, I am headed off to Florida for a warm, and relaxing Hogmanay.
