Mary Poppins

At least one commentator has compared Sarah Palin, the American vice-presidential hopeful, to everyone’s favourite nanny. ‘This election isn’t about the issues any more,’

wrote Steven Wells in The Guardian recently. ‘lt’s about America’s strange desire to be spanked by Mary Poppins.’ A strange desire, indeed, although back in Britain, the charisma of Poppins - if not Palin - shows no sign of waning either. Richard Eyre’s staging of the musical has been packing them in for four years and has been acclaimed for its altogether less saccharine take on the famous film. No spoonfuls of sugar required to

help this medicine go down.
