If this CD becomes a movre (Kung Fu Ninja preferably). the hybrid t:tle could be The Ghost of Zappa meets Friga/i on prog-rock pills. The debut from Edinburgh trio SAC (er. Bruce. Neil 8. JAZZ BOBO STENSON TRIO

Cantando (ECM Records) 0000

Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson leads this Superb trio With baSSist Anders Jormin and drummer Jon Fall in a concert in Edinburgh this month. and their new disc suggests that it will be a must—see occaSIon. This is the first time that the pianist has recorded wrth this particular line- up. although Jormin has featured on a number of his previous albums. and Falt has been his live drummer in recent years. The three musicians have developed a remarkable level of communication. and that is constantly reflected in a set that reveals the expected sense of thoughtful interplay and understated beauty. They are equally capable of raising the temperature when the notion takes them. and the chosen material including music by Astor Piazzolla. Alban Berg. Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry is varied enough to showcase a range of styles and moods. (Kenny Mathieson)

After the melancholy of Larnbchop's last album. the illness-inspired Damaged. Kurt Wagner and his band return with a more upbeat and occasionally up-tempo offering. Their tenth album definitely has a lighter feel than its gloomy predecessor. but in all other respects it has the familiar and distinctive sound the band evolved while helping to usher in the new wave of music from their hometown. Nashville.

There’s laid-back country balladry in 'Slipped Dissolved and Loosed' and meditative musings on 'Popeye‘. while 'Of Raymond' showcases the horn- backed soul introduced on what probably remains Lambchop's most popular record. Nixon. 'Sharing A Gibson With Martin Luther King Jr' meanwhile reminds us that Wagner and the boys can. when they put their backs into it. rock Out very nicely indeed.

Wagner has now streamlined the band to a core group of seven musicians. and he has. apparently, finally accepted that he's the frontman. Whatever the case. the sound remains pleasantly the same. (Miles Fielder)
