PREVIEW XMAS ROUND-UP LGBT CHRISTMAS CLUBBING Allan Radcliffe previews the best festive nights out in Glasgow and Edinburgh
For those of an LGBT persuasion who would rather burn up the dancefloor than roast their chestnuts on an open fire, the Central Belt plays host to a wheen of special club nights to take you right through the Christmas holidays.
Following on from last year’s triumphant outing, Cheri’s Christmas Cracker (Classic Grand, Glasgow, Fri 11 Dec), returns for another outrageous festive cabaret night. The saucy female impersonator hosts a Robbie Williams tribute act, male strippers and assorted singing talent.
Meanwhile, Utter Gutter (Glasgow School of Art, Sat 13 Dec) is observing a
Credit Crunch Crimbo, promising to go easy on your pockets but not on your ears. John Baillie Jnr (Dolby Anol) joins regular hostess Madame S for the usual mix of techno, house, disco and rock at the alternative queer night.
Over on the east coast and now in its 15th year, the Taste: Escape Xmas Party (The GRV, Edinburgh, Thu 25 Dec) yet again provides the upbeat alternative to a doze in front of the telly on Christmas Day. The veteran club returns a week later for the Taste New Year’s Day (The Liquid Room, Edinburgh, Thu 1 Dec), with DJs Fisher and Price playing the best tracks of 2008 as well as the usual ‘greatest hits’ package.
If it’s a good dose of cheesy familiarity you seek, what better way to break up that wintry no-man’s land between Christmas and New Year with a trip to Tackno (Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh, Sun 28 Dec), which this year rolls out a ‘Heaven & Hell’ party complete with a stocking- load of Christmas kitsch from queen of the decks, Trendy Wendy. And, for those of a more sophisticated bent, ring out 2008 in the company of a bevy of Burlesque beauties at Club Noir’s Backstage Hogmanay (The Winchester, Glasgow, Wed 31 Dec). ■ For full details see listings.
