We’ve packed in a lot of gigs, peered over lots of heads, and blown a fortune at the merch stand. Here’s The List’s very best live shows of 2008

It was packed but we loved the Electric Feel of MGMT in February (Beat Club), while in March Casiotone for the Painfully Alone’s (Nice N Sleazy’s) geeky synthesiser ballads charmed us, The Twilight Sad (King Tut’s) moved us, and Neil Young (The Playhouse) was not so much a concert more a force of nature with sideburns. April, you were really spoiling us, with experimental post-rock from Toronto’s Holy Fuck (Stereo), bad boy alt.rock from The Gutter Twins (Oran Mor), a sassy Salford singalong from The Ting Tings (King Tut’s) and Triptych’s awesome finale with Mogwai, Magik Markers and Frightened Rabbit.

An outstanding set of glowing

techno and ambient krautrock came from Ulrich Schnauss (Voodoo Rooms) in May, followed by a star turn from Sweden’s smart indie-pop crooner Jens Lekman (Oran Mor). Boys ogled and girls shimmied along to Girls Aloud (SECC) before Fleet Foxes (ABC2) arrived with harmonies sweet enough to make our hairs’ hairs stand on end. Alison Goldfrapp (Glasgow Royal Concert Hall) ranged from shy child to glorious psychedelic diva, and in July, those German pioneers of motorik euphoria, Harmonia left the crowd ecstatic. Our ears are still ringing from the mighty My Bloody Valentine (Barrowland) then at Connect in August, we had our gobs smacked by Sigur Ros and Elbow, performing at sunset.

Jenny Lewis (QMU, pictured)) gave a saucy, soulful, country gospel performance, and in October, we asked why, oh why can’t every Tuesday be as amazing as Fuck Buttons and Errors, Mogwai (Corn Exchange) on Tuesday? Shellac (ABC) stunned 1000 people into awed silence before playing a note, and Leonard Cohen (Clyde Auditorium) displayed his towering, affable genius the night after the US election. TV on the Radio (ABC) confirmed their status as the band- most-likely-to-go-stellar any day now in November. All in all, a musically delightful year. So 2009, what you got? (Claire Sawers)
