How did you get that job?

Name Catherine Bozec

Job Title lntemational Marketing Officer Company Edinburgh College of Art

When did you start your job? 7th October 2008

So what does your job actually involve? My job is to plan. develop and implement marketing activities to attract the best international students to study at Edinburgh College of Art from outside of the EU.

What is the best thing about your job? The best aspect of the job is the travelling to different target markets like China and India. on behalf of Edinburgh College of Art and meeting potential students from all over the world. It is hard work. but very rewarding. I enjoy being able to put into practice what I learnt from the lntemational Business degree I studied at Strathclyde University, e.g. conducting market research, appointing suitable representatives for the College overseas and informing the College‘s international marketing strategy in general. The worst aspect of the job can be the jet lag and missing friends and family when away from Edinburgh, but it's certainly worth the sacrifice.

What did you do before you started this job? I was doing a simin role at another educational institution in Edinburgh. where I worked for nearly four years. Before that. I worked in international business development in education and also the cosmetics industry. I graduated from university in 2003 with a degree in lntemational Business and Spanish. and since then have also completed a CIM diploma in Marketing.

What's the best way to get a job like yours? I think the best

way to get a job like mine is to study a relevant degree in business and. if possible. take part in an exchange programme during your studies to give you experience of being an international student. A good place to look for jobs is the www.jobs.ac.uk website under international office vacancies for the most recent posts available all over the UK.

What advice would you give to a young Catherine at the start of her career? I would advise a younger version of myself not

to be afraid to take opportunities. and to relocate to wherever those opportunities may be. as the graduate job market can be very competitive, especially in the area of marketing. I would also advise at least a year out to work in another country to learn about another working culture. for example. teaching English in China or Japan. Finally, one last word of advice, you can't expect to walk into a high level job straight away. Be prepared to start from the bottom and learn from your colleagues who have years of experience.

What big events does Edinburgh College of Art have planned for 2009? The College Fashion Show is 6-8 May. and the tickets for that go on sale in the first week of March. The Degree Shows start on 12 June. and that's a great opportunity to see the huge rangeofworkourstudentsproduoe.andmaybebuyaone—off artwork while you're at it
