Following intense campaigning, the fate of Titian's ‘Diana and Actaeon' has finally been decided. Words: Anna Millar

National Galleries of Scotland
have this week conlirmed that the £50 million for Titian's l'amous masterpiece has been raised. The galleries had until the end of January to raise the money and. through a new partnership with the National Gallery in London. the painting will pass into public ownership and remain on display.
As pan of the deal. a major step has also been taken to secure the future of the rest of the magnificent Bridgewater collection for a further Zl years. The paintings. which have been widely acclaimed as one of the most important private collections in the world. have been on loan from the Duke of Sutherland to the National Galleries of Scotland since I‘HS. The works include canvasses by Raphael. Poussin and Rembrandt and comprise the heart of the collection of the National Gallery in lidinburgh.

began last year and saw unprecedented campaigning from the public and a number of leading contemporary artists. 'l‘racey limin delivered a petition signed by Lucian lireud. David Hockney and Antony Gormley to Downing Street explaining that it would ‘be really embarrassing il‘ the Government doesn‘t buy the paintings and they are bought by some Russian oligarch and never seen again‘.
There was widespread apprehension that raising such a large stun would prove impossible in the current economic climate but the Scottish Government led the way with a pledge of {12.5 million and further donations from the National Heritage Memorial l‘und (£10 million). charities and the public have helped raise the amount needed.
Artist John Bellany hailed the news: 'I am so delighted that this great. great masterpiece has been secured. It will inspire the nation and people will come from all over the world to see it.‘

I Hillhead Library is hosting X Factor Dance Company and Paul Watt: A Decade of Dance 1998-2008 to run in conjunction with X Factor Dance Company’s new touring production. Query. The collection of photographs explores the relationship between company photographer over a ten-year period. The exhibition will run until Sat 21 Feb. Their new production is touring Scotland before transferring to Merce Cunningham studio in New York.

RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH FILM AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The Film of the Year award in association with The List was The Dark Knight, while elsewhere, Slumdog Millionaire swept the board, winning Best Film, Filmmaker of the year for Danny Boyle and Rising Star for Dev Patel. Kate Winslet picked up the Best Actress award for her performance as Hanna Schmitz in The Reader, with Mickey Rourke’s performance as retired pro Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson in Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler picking up the award for Best Actor.
