DIY REVIEW

I wanted to tell you about this gig I saw at The Forest Cafe. so here goes.

Mills and Boon are the sound of dissonance and separation. the howl in the heart of the machine. Their electronica evokes the guestron as to whether we are in hell. and whether life is Indeed the Visceral scream of Drablo.

They executed their music guretly as people. their collective demeanour was one of calmness. Leading their masterclass in paranora was an impromptu performance by a man at the end of his tether. howling into the night. Dante's inferno is here. it always has been. I guess we should have some sympathy for the devrl. Steve Martin by email

BRAND LOYALTY Re: Russell Brand (622)

We need more people that aren't afraid to be different! I find Russell Brand intriguing. I might not always agree or feel comfortable with what he says or does. but he is a breath of real air. I applaud him! Very entertaining. and hey, if Disney will stand behind him well, does anything else need to be said?

LETTER OF THE FORTNIGHT

PAINTING LANDSCAPE Re: Back in the frame (622)

I Wish people would stop being so negative about the recent acqursrtron of the Titian paintings. Much of the coverage in the Scottish press has talked about it as if the fact that rt spends some of the time in London is some kind of defeat.

Surely the eventual solution seems to me to be the best one imaginable. The partnership deal With the National Gallery in London means that the Scottish Government didn't have to find the whole figure themselves. Let's face rt. there are other things we could spend $50 million gurd on such as schools. hospitals and transport.

And for the moaners who think that they won't see any of the benefit of a painting hung in a gallery in Edinburgh. think about the bigger picture. Tourism is massively important to the Scottish economy. The fact that our cities are culturally interesting places to visrt is the reason so many people come here on holiday. to live or to travel through. The trickle down effect of having big stuff like this is that other artforms also benefit. How many folk do you know that only like film, or only books. or only music?

I have all the respect in the world for Dylan. It was really interesting to see his take on painting compared to his songwriting.

Nell

Definitely a very good exhibition. There's so much to see. I'll probably be coming back.

I have a few prints already. but seeing them in person is just phenomenal. It's a continuation of his work and insight as a poet and songwriter.

The colours and contrast were amazing. And it seemed he did them all in one year. 2007, which was just remarkable.

BOXING CLEVER

Re: The Antics, Dirty Suits and Nevada Base. ABC. Glasgow

I saw Nevada Base at their first gig at The Box and they were amazing, This band is going to be huge ~ they were by far the best thing on stage. The Antics and The Dirty Suits were completely rubbish and yet no one could take their eyes off the stage when Nevada Base went on. Three great guys With an incredible sound.

THINKING

OUTSIDE THE BOX Re: The Antics, Dirty Suits and Nevada Base, ABC. Glasgow

The Dirty Surfs and The Antics were the only bands playing real music at this gig. Nevada Base. on the other hand, bored us to death With their monotonous electonic beeps and manufactured beats that seemed to go on for hours. At least The Antics brought some muSical light and shade to proceedings and injected some genuine exrtement. especrally with the last two songs in their set.
