Museums and stately homes can be lively places during the day, but at night they’re pretty much dead - quite literally in the case of Pollok House. On Saturday 2 May, the halls of the popular Glasgow residence will be crawling with people, not all of whom are in possession of a pulse.

‘If you like a fright, then the House of Horror night will be right up your street,‘ says Pollok House’s learning officer, Alison Burke. “We’ll have brilliant performers haunting the vaults and bringing some (in)famous characters to light.’ Visitors can expect to encounter Arbella Stuart, the noblewoman who starved herself to death in the Tower of London, Sir John Maxwell of Pollok, the man who successfully tried the Paisley Witches and none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 1.

House of Horror is just one of 50 events taking place across the country as part of the Show Scotland weekend. Organised by Museums Galleries Scotland, the vast majority of the events are free, and offer children and families a wide range of activities and performances. From family fun days to Viking battle re-enactments, ghost stories to making music, the individual venues have worked hard to cater to all tastes. Especially at the Burrell Collection, where their Decathlon challenge takes you indoors, outdoors and asks you to be sporty, arty, daring and brainy. (Kelly Apter)
