How did you get that job?

Name Ruaridh Cunningham

Job Title Professional Mountain Biker Team chainreactioncyclescom/mtense

When (lid you start your job? I‘ve been racing since I was 12 but first staited making a career of it in 2008.

So what does your job actually involve? As jobs go it's pretty great! During the summer months I get to travel the world and race my bike in the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series. During the winter months I have to put in the hard graft and training to prepare for the next round of competitions.

Best /' Worst Aspects? The best aspect is the fact that I’m doing my dream job - getting paid to travel the world at such a young age. The worst aspect would have to be injuries and time spent in airports!

What did you do before you started this job? I was about to start a sports science degree at Napier University but then it all started kicking off with my mountain biking and I really thought I should give it a good shot. The Uni has kindly said that I can take up my place with them at any point in the future should I decide to do so.

What's the best way to get a job like yours? It's all about grit and determination - if you‘re willing to put in the hours you should follow your passion and stick in there.

What advice would you give to a young Ruaridh at the start of his career? You need put in the hard work for the training but. most importantly, you should enjoy it.

and finally.

What can List readers do to get involved in Mountain Biking? Go to a trail centre with some friends and give it a shot! Most centres have bikes for hire and trails for everyone - Glentress is perfect for starting out. If you want to try out some of Scotland‘s best terrain there's a new Bike Test at this year‘s Fort William Mountain Bike World Cup on June 6th/7th where you can test out the latest bikes on the world championship course. I reckon the Fort William event has the best atmosphere on the whole global circuit - if you want to get a taste of the sport, you should definitely check it out.
