REASONS TO GO SEE

THE JUST JOANS

1 It Camera Obscura are maudlln and Arab Strap bleak then self-styled puny losers from Motherwell The Just Joans are standing on a cliff top, saying goodbye to this cruel world. Their indie pop anti—anthems include an appropriation of 8 Gloria Gaynor hit called ‘I Won't Survive’. and the apocalyptically bleak ‘Hideous Accident (Hope He Doesn't Die in a)’.

2 They’re tabloid darlings The band are named after Daily Record agony aunt Joan Burnie's column. After meeting them she commented ‘I think they were nuts but I’m hugely flattered.’

3 Glasvegas? Pflt When it comes to broad West Coast drawls. Just Joans’ singer and songwriter David Pope makes Glasvegas frontman James Allan sound like a posh Bearsden madam. If they had a moan-off, it’d be a close run thing. but our money's on Pope.

at It’s not all doom and gloom ‘What Do We Do Now?’ sounds like the sort of Ioveably wistful strum The Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merrit might pen if he came from Bellshill rather than Boston. Sample lyric: ‘nothing's quite the same. except the Buckfast bottles in the rain'.

5 Actually, they’re quite uplittlng But then we've just swallowed a load of valium so what do we know. (Malcolm Jack)
