FirstWord SINNE EEG

Singer Sinne Eeg is one of the shining stars of the Scandinavian jazz scene, arriving here for her debut at Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, and to tell us of Danish pop and cabbage dinners

First record you ever bought Laban a Danish 80’s pop group. Sold some toys and earned enough for half the record (my brother bought the other half). I think I was 5 years old.

Last time you were chatted up A couple of days ago. First film you saw that really moved you I think it was Empire of the Sun. We had a school film club in my home town. Actually I might have been a little too young to watch it I was 11 years old at the time.

Last lie you told I never lie. ;-)

First movie you ever went on a date to Hmm, I can’t remember . . . must have been too focused on the date. Last time you cried It was a couple of weeks ago. I was sitting in my car on Santa Monica Beach the day after they announced that Michael Jackson had died. They were playing the song ‘Ben’ on the radio a beautiful ballad that MJ sang when he was 12 or 13. I must admit I shed a tear.

Last great meal you cooked A wok meal with cabbage and beef. It was awful!! Last extravagant purchase you made A nice cream coloured vintage purse. Bought it in New York.

First crush Last book you read. Anita O’Day’s biography High Times, Hard Times. First great piece of advice you were given Always keep your feet warm and dry.

Last time you were star struck I went to see Nancy Wilson in Oakland last month. I’m a huge fan, and I would have loved to meet her after the show, but I didn’t want to disturb her. First thing you’d do if you ran the country Actually, I’m pretty satisfied with the society I’m living in. Some things could be improved. For example, I’m very worried about the developement in Danish health care. We are going towards an American model, where it’s more and more common to have private health insurance.

Last meal on earth - what would it be A good fish soup with saffron. Last time you exploited your position to get something Actually I don’t think ever do that not consciously at least.

First time you realised you were famous Well, I’m not that famous, but I was a

bit surprised the first time I was having coffee in a café and someone came over and asked for my autograph. Last time someone criticised your work Well, there was a little criticism in a review from last week. It was mainly good, but the critic thought my improvisation have more variation.

Transfer in Tivoli Garden, Copenhagen. Last time you bought someone flowers It was for my mother’s birthday in April.

First thing you think of when you wake up in the morning I think of what I’m supposed to remember that day.

First three words your friends would use to describe you Probably absent-minded, down-to earth and ‘madglad’ which means a love of good food. Last thing you think of before you go to sleep No idea. I think i just have a stream of thoughts and associations depending on my level of stress.

First concert you ever attended I don’t remember. I think I have attended concerts all my life. But one of the first I remember was Manhattan Sinne Eeg plays the Hub, Edinburgh, Fri 31 Jul. For more Edinburgh Jazz Festival see Edinburgh Festivals Magazine with this issue.

This fortnight we have been mostly looking young, apparently. Several List staffers have found themselves delightedly fumbling for driving licences or passports this week, as the newer, stricter rules for ID-ing people buying booze take effect. You think we look under 25? Will you marry us? Meanwhile, we’ve been developing a 2 THE LIST 23 Jul–6 Aug 2009

series of leftfield celebrity crushes. Her maternity cover shift on BBC Radio 6Music has reminded us just how brilliant Cerys Matthews and her strange, wondrous taste in music are, while the news that the very splendid Ryan Gosling has a band called Dead Man’s Bones (they’re on

YouTube) who aren’t half bad, actually, is rather warming our cockles. We’re also, er, happy to report that our first Fringe bribe of the season arrived in the office this morning. Item: one cupcake from Afternoon Tea at the Voodoo Rooms. As bars go, it’s not set terribly high yet. Take up the challenge, theatre companies!
