When did you start your job? I set up my own business as a freelance PR Consultant fi ve years ago and worked in the Press Offi ce at the Book Festival for the fi rst time in 2006, taking on the role as Press Manager in 2007. I also look after the press offi ces for the Edinburgh International Science Festival and the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust. So what does your job actually involve? Working with journalists, TV and radio broadcasters and websites around the world to promote the Book Festival and the authors who will be appearing. During the Festival itself, we co-ordinate interviews, TV and radio broadcasts and photocalls for over 400 journalists and photographers on site in Charlotte Square Gardens.
Best / Worst Aspects? The best is working with a great team, meeting so many interesting people every day and getting to read so many wonderful books. The worst is trying to set up photocalls in the pouring rain, although of course this year the sun will shine in August!
What did you do before you started this job? Everything from fundraising for a wildlife charity in Kenya and marketing for a zoo in Hertfordshire to being Marketing and Sponsorship Director of Dynamic Earth here in Edinburgh. Immediately before I set up my own business, I spent a year backpacking around South America. What’s the best way to get a job like yours? Not being afraid to start at the bottom and get involved with everything. PR is about building relationships and networking.
What advice would you give to a young Frances at the start of her career? Enjoy what you do and remember that you make your own luck. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.

Outwith the big names at this year’s Book Festival, who’s your tip to make an impression amongst the new Scottish talent on show? Tricky as there are so many great new authors, but I loved Eleanor Thom’s debut novel The Tin-Kin. Website www.edbookfest.co.uk
