Name Frances Spencer Job Title Communications Offi cer

Company Destination Edinburgh Marketing Alliance When did you start your job? November 2006

So what does your job actually involve? My job mainly involves promoting Edinburgh! My role covers both managing projects and activating PR strategies. I am lucky because my projects are diverse in nature such as the Made in Edinburgh project which is a collaborative partnership with Film Focus and Filmhouse to promote Edinburgh’s creative industries. I devise and manage all aspects of the PR activity and liaise with the partner organisations to ensure sell out audiences at each event. I have also just produced two new videos available to view on www.edinburgh-inspiringcapital.com. The videos promote Edinburgh’s contemporary side and show Edinburgh in a vibrant and exciting way. In terms of PR I form part of the media team and as such deal with press enquiries and write press releases, features and the DEMA e-zine.

Best / Worst Aspects? There is so much to promote about Edinburgh and not enough time! Interesting projects and the range of people I meet is defi nitely a plus of the job.

What did you do before you started this job? I was living in Valencia studying Spanish before I started working here, before that I worked in marketing for a retail clothing company and managed a promotions team for a drinks company.

What’s the best way to get a job like yours? Be proactive, exible and get involved at grass root level to gain experience, volunteer if need be. What advice would you give to a young Frances at the start of her career? Nothing is out-with your grasp, believe in your self and your talent.

And nally . .

With so many projects ahead promoting Edinburgh, what are you most looking forward to? We are currently working on the winter and spring marketing and PR campaigns to promote Edinburgh’s offering to visitors and residents for 2009/10. Website www.edinburgh-inspiringcapital.com
