When did you start your job? With my partner Gianni Oliveri we created our theatre company in 1999. We want to bring original ideas to the theatre and when possible to perform new material (such as Tixi and Moxo: a colourful adventure for children and grown ups too, which we have brought to the Fringe this year). So what does your job actually involve? Gianni and I work together on all the different tasks involved in running a small independent theatre company. However, my specifi c strength is preparing and setting up the production. I enjoy looking for new material and for exciting ideas. We also work in schools to encourage children to express themselves through the medium of acting. This begins with “free play” to liberate the voice, the body, the emotion and also involves producing short plays with the students.
Best / Worst Aspects? The best part of working with a small independent company is the freedom to express our passion for the theatre. Rather than playing the same roles repeatedly we’re able to take on imaginative and even unusual projects. For us the greatest pleasure is not the applause at the end of the production (although that is wonderful) but the creation and construction of a piece. In the educational part of our work we’re able to build relationships with children and young people based on free expression and communication.
What did you do before you started this job? Although I graduated in law I have always been interested in the arts, I studied opera for seven years and performed in local theatres. I did theatre studies and worked with local theatre companies before creating Teatro Instabile in 1999. What’s the best way to get a job like yours? My job as an independent manager, director, producer, actor, costume designer, lorry driver, cook and bottle washer is so particular to me that no one else could get it!

After the Edinburgh Festival, where next for Compagnia Teatro Instabile? On the fi rst of October we open our theatre school here in Imperia.
