When did you start your job? I became General Manager (GM) of Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor in July 2008 but I’ve been a GM for over 25 years. At the start of my senior management career I was probably the youngest GM (26 years old) of a large hotel group when I managed the Skean Dhu Hotel in Dyce, Aberdeen. So what does your job actually involve? Hotel management has changed so much, especially since ‘lodges’ came into the market place. But in a full service hotel like Hilton what’s still really important is the ‘Art of Hospitality’. Our guests still want to be recognised as individuals and want well trained employees to deliver a high quality of consistent service. I have to make sure we deliver consistent Hilton standards, through an organised team with some genuine fun and enjoyment. As a business manager I also have to maintain my hotel’s profi tability through good times and tougher times which means I have to be sales oriented and have a good head for fi gures.
Best / Worst Aspects? BEST…seeing so many of my team progress. I get a real sense of pride from training and coaching my team; my last two deputy managers are now Hilton hotel managers. I’m also an assessor for Hilton’s future hotel management. WORST…not getting to the Open this year to see the world’s best golfers in action. We do work more varied hours from those in a ‘day job’ but we thrive on the difference.
What did you do before you started this job? I was the General Manager of Hilton Warwick. When the chance to work and live in Edinburgh arose I jumped at it. Edinburgh is a really great place to live and work.
What’s the best way to get a job like yours? Get a relevant qualifi cation or join a major hotel group like Hilton and use the extensive training opportunities they provide. What advice would you give to a young Steve at the start of his career? I have worked in all the departments at the shop-fl oor level. Washed dishes, made beds, served meals/drinks, checked guests in and carried luggage. You need to experience this to manage your team well later in your career. Also, have a career plan. The pay can be low to start with but the long term rewards are great. Have fun at all times!
And fi nally . . . If you could stay in any hotel in any city in the world..? The Waldorf Astoria in New York…..a great iconic hotel in an amazing city.
