REVIEW FILM & ARCHIVE MATERIAL ANJA KIRSCHNER AND DAVID PANOS: THE LAST DAYS OF JACK SHEPPARD CCA, Glasgow, until Sat 26 Sep ●●●●●

German-Greek filmmaking duo Anja Kirschner and David Panos are screening their feature, The Last Days of Jack Sheppard, inside an installation made of the film’s own sets. They accompany this with a display of archive material associated with the film’s subject, the notorious 18th century proletarian hero Jack Sheppard, who was at large at the time of Britain’s first recorded financial crisis, known as the South Sea Bubble. During his controversial career Sheppard was imprisoned four times, escaping on every occasion. This hour-long period drama explores the representation of Sheppard’s hedonistic character, looking at the story through contemporary eyes.

Kirschner and Panos are great storytellers, but they mix things up by

drawing attention to the film’s construction and constraints, particularly the discrepancy between historical fact and popularised fiction. Without trying to create an authentic account, the artists highlight the

distance between contemporary and 18th century subjectivity, the problems of representation and the rise of popular culture. They display remnants of the film sets alongside the archive of artist prints and publications of the early 1700s; novels, plays, photographs and chapbooks of the 1800s; and periodicals, story pamphlets and films of the 1900s. Cleverly these extra exhibits add to the cycle of reinterpretation. (Talitha Kotzé)
