How did you get that job?

Name Nadine Livingston Job Title Emerging Artist

Company Scottish Opera

When did you start your job? 10th August 2009

So what does your new role actually involve? It involves being given major roles in two operas in the upcoming season. I will also receive regular coaching, both musical and language, I will get to work with directors and conductors who come to the company and I will be able to sing in concerts with the Scottish Opera Orchestra. Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect of this job is defi nitely the fact that I get to work on roles in a national company that are perfect for me at this stage in my singing and I will have fantastic exposure in a very nurturing environment. Just being part of a company like Scottish Opera will be a fantastic experience.

What did you do before you joined Scottish Opera? I have been very lucky to come straight out of training into this position. I studied for 7 years at the Royal Northern College of Music doing my Undergraduate Degree and Postgraduate Diploma, training to be an Opera singer.

What’s the best way to get into opera? Before I was offered the Emerging Artist contract, I had already auditioned for the company a couple of times and performed with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera in a concert at St Andrew’s in the Square, Glasgow. Usually at the start of a singing career, auditions are the best way to get your foot in the door. What advice would you give to a young Nadine at the start of her career? I have always tried to get the most out of everything I do, that way I can know that I have given everything I can. Making sure I sing roles that are suitable for me now, which aren’t too big but still challenge me is a major factor for me. I think that is something very important for young singers. But most of all I love singing and I think that if you love doing what you are doing then that will show and other people will enjoy it more.

And nally . . .

When preparing for a performance, what are the best drinks and snacks to loosen the vocal chords? I don’t think that any loosen your vocal chords really but many people like to stay away from things like chocolate and yoghurt, dairy products really. Apples or chewing gum are good to eat though as you tend to produce more saliva and so that helps you not to dry out before you sing. Nadine will perform the title role in Kátya Kabanová touring Scotland Thu 10 Sept Sat 24 Oct. For dates and info www.scottishopera.org.uk
