The best new nights in town. This month: Adventures in Sound and Beat Control Residents Andy Wilson (pictured) takes charge at Adventures in Sound while the Evol DJs (Keiron Mellotte and DJ Skoda) take care of Beat Control. Guests None confirmed as yet with the residents on hand every week, but don’t be surprised by the odd DJ set from various indie bands in the future. Music policy Indie disco favourites, a side order of rock, alternative classics and a smattering of electro (ie everything from Nirvana and Arctic Monkeys to Daft Punk and Justice) are the order of the day at both nights. What they say ‘Despite its reputation as a cultural hub, Edinburgh has lacked any real sense of balance for clubbers for years. Previously, unless you liked R&B, commercial dance or cheese, there were only a few credible alternatives available. These were at much smaller venues and nothing on the scale of what the HMV Picture House has to offer,’ explains David Laing, group operations manager for the MAMA Group, which operates the venue. ‘Discerning music fans will now be able to enjoy a night out at some of Scotland’s best indie, electro and alternative club nights, socialising with like-minded music fans, in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The ABC in Glasgow for instance has been a real hit with clubbers looking for something different from the mainstream, and we’re aiming to provide a similar alternative in the Capital.’ What we say They’ve certainly shaken up the live music scene in Edinburgh and we expect them to do the same when it comes clubbing. They’ve finally cleared up a few legal wrangles and are now free to re-open the venue for late night clubs, at what will surely be the biggest indie shindig in town. TECHNO/HOUSE SENSU IS 5 Sub Club, Glasgow, Fri 16 Oct
Sensu reaches its fifth birthday this fortnight, and the continued health of Glasgow’s electronica specialist is well worth celebrating. Starting life at the Q Club and Liquid Lounge – as well as co-promoting Glasgow’s Wee Chill Festival – Sensu graduated to the Sub Club, a venue that complements the club’s underground house grooves, love of techno and commitment to quality guests. Past nights have featured appearances by the likes of likes of Joris Voorn, Josh Wink, Wighnomy Brothers and DJ Rolando, proving the club’s commitment to the best of electronic dance music in all its forms. As a ‘thanks for helping us get here’ the organisers are putting together a two-part party of sheer quality. The first date (16 Oct) is headlined by Michael Mayer,
one of the leaders of Cologne’s electronica scene, Mayer is one of the co-founders (alongside Wolfgang Voigt, Jorgen Paape and Reinhard Voigt) of the much respected Kompakt Records, famed for its futuristic vision and eclectic roster of forward thinking artists (including Oxia, Rex the Dog and Justus Köhncke), always retaining a deep love of accessible rhythms with a slanted pop sensibility.
The second date (23 Oct) will feature the skills of
house and techno supremo Loco Dice. The masterful German DJ and producer started his career in the world of hip hop, even scoring support slots with names like Ice Cube and Snoop Dog, but lost faith in the world of rap during the 90s making a move to expansive techno and deep dark house. A double bill of Teutonic electronic perfection, then,

HIP HOP DJ MONEYSHOT Mixed Bizness at Glasgow School of Art, Thu 15 Oct
Mixed Bizness features Boom Monk Ben upstairs in the Art School every Thursday, mixing all manner of electronic music with heavy bass. This month he has Cardiff’s DJ Moneyshot for company. An official DJ for Solid Steel Radio, Moneyshot has previously won the station’s ‘Mix of the Year’ competition after unearthing great tunes from much-maligned acts like Billy Joel, The Eagles and even Bruce Forsythe. He describes his style as, ‘frantic but fluid. Plenty of quick mixes and acapellas flying over loops. My background is hip hop, but the tunes are drawn from every far-flung corner of the record crate.’ Moneyshot says the highlight of a recent tour in Australia was ‘playing a full moon party to the backdrop of a beach paradise.’ While such a setting will elude him in Glasgow, there’s no doubt he will fit in at Mixed Bizness. ‘I’m all over Profisee’s “Foolz Thinking” single, the reggae stylings of Mungo’s Hi-Fi, a guy from Brisbane called Slynk and Bristol’s favourite son, Parker,’ he says.
Mixed Bizness resident, Boom Monk Ben, sums up the booking: ‘We’ve
been trying for so long to get Moneyshot up to Glasgow. His sound and style are perfect for what we do and we can’t wait to have him rock ours, yours and everyone else’s socks off.’ (Pete MacLeod)
