Mind&Body PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT HEALTH & BEAUTY

Name Julie-Ann Laidlaw aka Sunday Blue

Job Title Managing Director Company Blond Ambition Events

When did you start your job? I started the company in December 2008.

So what does your new role actually involve? Ha! How long have we got? My job can involve anything from sweeping up dressing room oors to arranging photoshoots and publicity material. Promotion and stage management of my events, concept ideas for productions and performer routines. Tailoring entertainment to suit corporate bookings and charity events. Oh, and making copious amounts of coffee!

Best / Worst Aspects? The best thing about my job is the people. I have worked with some of the biggest names in international entertainment and I’ve had the pleasure of nurturing some amazing newcomers and watching them develop their skills. I’m genuinely proud of the fact that I’ve worked with all of these people in a professional capacity and the bond that you develop with your cast when you’re doing something as intense and exciting as the Edinburgh Fringe is very special indeed. The worst aspect is the never ending ‘to do’ list. What did you do before you started this job? I’ve worked as a business development manager, a nancial advisor, an events coordinator, a burlesque performer, a photographer and model and, most importantly, I’m also a mother of two.

What’s the best way to get a job like yours? It’s essential to get out there and get to know everyone who’s working on the scene. Go to as many events as possible and ask yourself what works about the night and what doesn’t. Make sure that every tiny detail has been taken care of; it’s attention to detail that truly makes the difference between a rst rate, professional event and a show where people leave feeling that things could have been just a little bit better. Offer your services as a stage hand, that’s the best way of gaining experience.

What advice would you give to a young Julie-Ann at the start of her career? A strong sense of resilience is indispensable in this industry and even though there are lots of lovely, supportive people, there are still lonely, tough aspects of the job. At those times you’ve got to remember the incredible feeling of seeing a sold out venue lled with people going wild about a show that you have created, what a buzz! That makes all the hard work and sleepless nights worth it. So now the Edinburgh Festival is over, what’s next for Blonde Ambitions Events? Blond Ambition Events are busier than ever now that the Fringe has nished. I had a romantic notion of a lovely, lazy September but it was straight back to work producing a new show, Des O’Connor’s Fallen Angels, which runs in London throughout October. After that I’m producing a special festive High Tease & Vegas in the Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow, on 5 December, followed by a string of London dates and corporate bookings for my Christmas Carol Cabaret show. The New Year holds a lot of exciting surprises which will be revealed very shortly, and then it’s back to thinking about Fringe 2010. They do say there’s no rest for the wicked, and I’m a very wicked girl.
