Last up is Brahms’ Symphony No 1 – 21 years in the making, so intimidated was he by Beethoven’s great symphonic legacy, and sometimes referred to as ‘Beethoven’s 10th’.

Perahia’s well known affinity with JS Bach began when he turned to the baroque master’s works after a thumb injury nearly finished his piano career.
