Up 3D (U) ●●●●● (Pete Docter/Bob Peterson, US, 2009) Voices of Christopher Plummer, Edward Asner, Paul Eiding. 96min. See above. Selected release. Warren Miller: Dynasty (U) (Warren Miller, US, 2009) 90min. Deep powder, bright jackets and big airs in Miller’s latest snow riding odyssey. Part of St Andrew's Day celebrations. Glasgow Film Theatre. Ways of Viewing: The Wooden Lightbox and the Audible Picture Show (18) (Various, 2009) 90min. A screening of Canadian artist Alex Mackenzie’s The Wooden Lightbox: A Secret Art of Seeing, a work which draws from turn of the century cinematic prototypes and long forgotten ideas surrounding the moving image, and Matt Hulse’s Audible Picture Show, an international touring show comprising short audio works created for a darkened cinema by a diverse range of practitioners. CCA, Glasgow. Welcome (15) ●●●●● (Phillippe Lioret, France, 2009) Vincent Lindon, Firat Ayverdi, Audrey Dana. 109min. The plight of the immigrant and the viciousness of casual racism are the backdrop for this warm and engrossing drama about Bilal (Ayverdi), a young Iraqi refugee on his way to England who enlists the help of a former Olympic swimmer to help him swim the Channel. The resulting friendship is portrayed with intensity and detail, aided by the solid presence of Vincent Lindon as the reluctant coach. Selected release. Whisky Galore (PG) ●●●●● (Alexander Mackendrick, UK, 1949) Basil Radford, Joan Greenwood, Jean Cadell. 82min. Much-loved Ealing comedy by the late Sandy Mackendrick. A ship carrying a cargo of whisky is shipwrecked off a Scottish island during wartime, so the locals decide it’s time to quench their thirst. Full of wit and charm that others can only hope to emulate. Part of St Andrew's Day celebrations. Glasgow Film Theatre.

✽✽ The White Ribbon (15) ●●●●● (Michael Haneke, Germany/Austria,

2009) Christian Friedel, Ulrich Tukur, Burghart Klaussner. 143min. Featuring the remarkable black and white cinematography of Christian Berger, Haneke’s latest film expertly paints a withering portrait of life in a pre-World War German village that is dominated by feudalism and a particularly sadistic breed of religion. An outstanding, multilayered achievement, dripping with nastiness and resonating with a sense of impending historical doom. Selected release. Who’s Afraid of Designer Babies? (PG) (Sean Cousins, UK, 2004) 50min. Horizon edition that examines three techniques often linked to alarmist headlines about designer babies pre- implantation genetic diagnosis, gene therapy and cloning. This screening will be followed by Angel-benito Garcia-Anta’s short film Eugenic Questions. Part of Eugenics season. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. William McLaren An Artist Out of Time (U) ●●●●● (Jim Hickey, UK, 2009) 51min. Documenting the life and work of Scottish artist William McLaren from simple beginnings in the 1920s in a mining town to the creation of work for some of the finest private houses and public buildings in the UK. This screening will be followed by Jim Hickey’s short film And So Goodbye. Part of Made in Edinburgh season. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Zombieland (15) ●●●●● (Ruben Fleischer, US, 2009) Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone. 80min. Pitched somewhere between From Dusk Till Dawn and Anchor Man, with a nod of the stetson to George A Romero’s zombie flicks, this big, dumb and fun flick features four disparate characters hell-bent on surviving a world overrun by zombies. Cineworld Renfrew Street, Glasgow.
