Re: The Magnificent Tati Jacques Tati was a genius, and this film examines his career and looks at each of his six films. It uses Tati's films extensively and is really well done without being either preachy or snobby. It lets Tati's work speak for itself, which is great. I do think it is a little short however, and that it rushed through his last two films (Trafic and Parade) but these are not major flaws. I also think it would have been nice to hear more about Tati's wife and kids.
Overall, a great honest film about a overlooked visionary of the movie business. Highlights included the building of the set of Playtime and a really funny sequence on foley that uses a scene from Mon Oncle and a toilet plunger in an interesting way. Also seeing the garden scene from My Uncle with very bizarre English voices is amazing. It is a great factual film on a subject that should have been covered long ago.

Re: Side Dishes (645) Dear editor, On the face of it, the StreetSmart scheme (645, Side Dishes) may seem a good idea, but, although I am not suggesting that people don't support it, there is a much better way to help those in need. Most of the restaurants taking part, and those who eat in
them, actually help to cause homelessness, poverty and starvation because of the foods that such establishments provide and people choose to consume, in spite of the fact that foods that homeless, poor and starving people could eat direct, such as soya and vegetable protein, are instead given to ‘food animals’ (a horrible term) to fatten them up for people to eat.
The writer of Side Dishes states, ‘Decent food should be available to all, whatever their circumstances.’ Quite. A very valuable way of helping to achieve that is to consume an animal-free diet. As we are in the so-called season of peace, love and goodwill and with the time to make New Year resolutions just a couple of weeks away, what better time to make that all-important decision to consume a diet that helps homeless, poor and starving people both here and abroad, as well as (non-human) animals and the planet. albums – but every time I talk to people about how good his stuff is, everyone from music obsessives to your average music fan talks about his music being full of doom, gloom and despondency. This is the fault
of totally lazy journalism! His last few big tracks ‘Red Travellin’ Socks’, ‘Fuck It, I Love You’ and ‘Break My Heart’ are majorly upbeat indie stompers! In fairness, The List has been giving him great reviews for years, but, like everyone else, please lay off the miserable tag and let’s embrace him for what he is, our central belt Jarvis Cocker and a national treasure.
