The eccentric frontman of loveable art-poppers Guillemots, Dangerfield plays material from his debut solo album, Fly Yellow Moon, released this month. Since his early demise, the Drake cult has slowly snowballed, which could have something to do with the tantalisingly small volume of music created in his musical career. The pal of John Martyn is now, 25 years later, being celebrated in a concert, curated by original producer Joe Boyd, of reinterpretations of his songs by artists such as Stuart Murdoch, the rediscovered Vashti Bunyan and Richard’s son Teddy Thompson. A triple bill of artists representing Europe’s other Celtic cultures: Pennoù Skolum hail from Brittany, King Chiaullee are a young Manx quintet and Marful are a Galician (Spain) outfit combining the traditional music of their province with cafe jazz and early-20th century dance hall stylings. Duncan McLean’s new piece of musical theatre tells the story of Thomas Fraser, the fascinating Shetland fisherman who, inspired by his American blues and country heroes, recorded his own versions of their songs on reel-to-reel tape recorder and handed them out as gifts to close friends. Only after his untimely death was his passionately performed music discovered by the wider public. Long Gone Lonesome combines storytelling, music from Orkney’s Lone Star Swing Band and improvisation, to tell Fraser’s moving story. Part of Celtic Connections. The Shetland Bus is the new project from Shetland fiddle/piano sisters Jenna and Bethany Reid (with pipes, flute, bass and percussion) commemorating the dangerous covert missions to transport people and equipment between Shetland and Nazi-occupied Norway in World War Two.
