Artists have created portraits of themselves at work since the Renaissance, often depicting themselves in a dramatic and flattering light. American performance artist Paul McCarthy’s famous and irreverent film Painter satirises this notion of the ‘solitary genius’.

With a fascination for the just forgotten and recently redundant, Banks’ use of lo-fi animation, cut and paste assemblages and installations, convey a unique perception of sculpture. Oonagh Hegarty, another North East of England-based artist, originally from Northern Ireland, similarly works with found media and fragmented imagery.

Various artistic attempts to render the familiar strange are here assembled in an extraordinarily neat sequence of objects, films and photographs. Icelandic artist Jakobsdóttir has got the knack for styling, and it’s the fastidious nature of these charmingly clean-cut works that sets about a methodical dismantling of fiction from fact. Part of DCA’s 10th Anniversary programme, this exhibition features works by the highly acclaimed Glasgow-based artist Martin Boyce, who recently represented Scotland with a solo show of works at the Venice Biennale.
Turner in January It’s the start of a new year, which means another chance to enjoy the annual display
of JMW Turner watercolours at the National Galleries. The collection was bequeathed by Henry Vaughan, and the work ranges from early topographical wash drawings to the atmospheric sketches of continental Europe in the 1830s and 1840s. ■ National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, until Sat 30 Jan.
