Here’s a NewYear resolution: visit him.

This amazing painting by Edward Sutcliffe is a inalist from the 1,901 worldwide entrants to the 2009 BP Portrait Award.

You can see it now, together with the works of the 56 other inalists and winners, in their only Scottish exhibition at the Dean Gallery, Edinburgh. Since 1990 the annual BP Portrait Award has helped stimulate interest in portraiture and is now the genre’s major international prize.

But a visit to the BP Portrait Award exhibition won’t cost you a penny. So you can start the new year as you mean to go on.
